That you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,
2 Peter 3:2
Peter wants their minds anchored in something older, deeper, and more stable than the voices pressing in around them. He points them to the prophets and to the apostles, to the Word that God has already spoken and faithfully carried forward.
When confusion arises, our instinct is often to seek something new. A new insight. A new angle. A new answer that will somehow quiet the unrest. But Peter directs us backward to keep us steady as we move forward. Remember. Go back. Return to what God has already said.
The holy prophets spoke of God’s purposes unfolding across generations. The apostles carried forward the commandment of the Lord and Savior. Different voices, different times, one consistent message: God has spoken, and His Word does not lose its authority simply because the world grows louder.
Part of maturity is learning that when we feel uncertain, we do not need novelty nearly as much as we need remembrance. Not a fresh word that replaces the old, but a fresh hearing of what has always been true.
Father, we confess that we are often drawn to what is new instead of what is sure. Thank You that You have not left us to guess at truth, but have spoken clearly through Your Word. Root us more deeply in what You have said, and keep us from drifting toward lesser voices. We surrender our craving for novelty and choose the steady ground of Your truth.
