For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
2 Peter 2:20–22
Peter closes with images that are intentionally jarring. He provides an accurate picture revealing the ugliness of returning to what God has cleansed us from. Sin may romanticize itself in temptation, but seen clearly, it is not beautiful. It is degrading. It is destructive. It is beyond what grace has made possible in us.
How often do we feel the pull to return? To old thought patterns, old habits, old comforts, old sins that once ruled us. The flesh has a long memory. Familiar mud can feel strangely comfortable, even when we know where it leads.
Our disgust for sin cannot sustain the Christian life; it must be strengthened by deeper affection. We do not finally overcome sin simply by hating it more, though we should hate it. We overcome as Christ becomes more beautiful, more satisfying, more precious to us than what once drew us back.
The gospel does not merely wash us externally. It gives us a new heart, a new identity, a new life. Peter’s warning presses us to live from that newness, to refuse the lie that what once enslaved us is somehow still home. It is not home anymore. Christ is.
Lord, we confess that parts of us still feel the pull of what You have already called us out of. Thank You that, in Christ, our old life is no longer our truest life. Deepen our hatred of sin, but even more, deepen our love for You. We turn from old mire and make our home again in the mercy and beauty of Christ.
