For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”
2 Peter 2:20–22
Peter ends this section with perhaps his heaviest warning. To turn back after seeing clearly is no small matter. To become entangled again is not merely to stumble; it is to return to what once enslaved.
The image is sobering because sin entangles before it overcomes. It wraps around slowly, through familiar habits, old loves, repeated compromises, neglected watchfulness. What begins as curiosity becomes closeness. Closeness eventually becomes captivity.
Peter’s warning is not written to make tender believers despair. It is written to keep us watchful and near. To remind us that knowledge alone is not enough. Proximity to truth is not the same as abiding in Christ. We are kept not by occasional interest in Jesus, but by ongoing union with Him.
When we feel the pull of old entanglements, the answer is not pretending to be strong. The solution is not simply to try harder. To overcome, we must run quickly to Christ, into the light, into confession, into community, into the means of grace. He is not honored by our pretending we are above temptation. He is honored by our fleeing to Him when we are tempted.
Lord, we confess that we are more vulnerable than we like to admit and more easily entangled than we often realize. Thank You that You do not call us to fight alone but invite us to remain near Your heart. Keep us watchful, honest, and quick to run to You. We renounce old entanglements and ask You to hold us fast in Your grace.
