These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
2 Peter 2:17–19
Peter gives a clear exposure of sin’s deceit. Sin sells itself as liberty, but it leads to bondage. It says, “Express yourself,” while tightening chains. It says, “Take what you want,” while hollowing out the soul. It promises freedom from limits, but not freedom for life.
True freedom is never found in serving the flesh. We become servants of whatever rules us. Appetite, approval, lust, greed, pride; whatever governs our hearts eventually masters our lives.
But Christ offers a different freedom. Not freedom to become less human, but freedom to become who we were created to be. Freedom from sin’s tyranny. Freedom to obey with joy. Freedom to love, to walk in holiness, to live without being owned by our desires.
Peter’s warning is also an invitation to ask: what is ruling me? What do I obey most quickly? What voice has my easiest yes? Because where our obedience naturally bends often reveals where our slavery still lingers.
Lord, we confess that we often call things freedom that only deepen our captivity. Thank You that, in Christ, we are not left to our chains but are offered true release. Show us what still masters us, break what still binds us, and teach us the joy of obeying You. We surrender every lesser master and receive again the freedom of belonging wholly to Christ.
