These are waterless springs and mists driven by a storm. For them the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved. For, speaking loud boasts of folly, they entice by sensual passions of the flesh those who are barely escaping from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved.
2 Peter 2:17–19
Peter now uses images of disappointment. A spring promises refreshment. A mist suggests relief. But waterless springs and mists driven by storms are deceptive. They appear to offer life, yet deliver nothing.
That is the ache of false teaching and false living; it promises what it cannot provide. Relief without repentance. Freedom without holiness. Fulfillment without surrender. It offers the appearance of refreshment but leaves the soul thirsty.
We know that kind of disappointment. We reach for things that seem like they will satisfy, a new success, a new indulgence, a new distraction, a new voice that tells us what we want to hear, and for a moment, they seem promising. But in the end, they cannot give what only God can give.
Jesus is not a waterless spring. He is living water. He does not tease thirst; He meets it. He does not merely excite the soul for a moment; He satisfies it with Himself.
Lord, we confess how often we chase things that look refreshing but leave us emptier than before. Thank You that in Christ, there is living water for thirsty souls. Teach us to discern what cannot satisfy and to return quickly to the One who can. We bring our thirst to You and ask You to fill us with what is real.
