Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

Peter ends this section by pointing to the heart that resists authority and follows its own desires without restraint.
Bold, not in faith, but in self-direction.
Willful, not in obedience, but in independence.
A heart that places itself at the center is always dangerous.
The way of Christ is different. It is marked by surrender, by submission, by a willingness to live under His authority rather than apart from it.
Not restrictive, but freeing.
Not limiting, but life-giving.
True freedom is not found in doing whatever we want; it is found in living as we were created to live.
Lord, we confess how easily we lean toward independence and self-direction. Thank You for the freedom that comes from living under Your authority. Shape our hearts to follow You with humility and trust. We lay down our will and choose to walk in Yours.
