A Different Approach

2 Peter 1:1

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 Peter 1:1

Peter opens this letter differently.

He calls himself “Simeon Peter,” his Hebrew name. It feels personal. Weathered. Reflective. He is not the impulsive fisherman writing his first letter. Peter is an older shepherd, aware that his time is short.

He identifies himself first as a servant. The word means “bond-servant,” one who willingly belongs to another. Before apostle. Before authority. Servant.

The order matters.

Then he says something stunning to his readers: they have obtained “a faith of equal standing with ours.

Equal standing.

Not second-tier faith.
Not diluted faith.
Not apostolic faith versus ordinary faith.

The phrase means equally precious, equally honored. The same righteousness that saved Peter saves them. The same grace that restored Peter sustains them.

And this faith comes “by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Not by effort.
Not by heritage.
Not by spiritual résumé.

By righteousness given, not earned.

Peter once boasted in loyalty. Now he boasts in Christ’s righteousness alone.

The ground is level at the cross.

Lord, we confess how easily we compare faith or measure ourselves against others. Thank You that our standing rests in Your righteousness, not our record. Help us live as grateful servants, not spiritual competitors. We surrender our identity to You.

Equal at the Cross,
