Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,
1 Peter 5:6
Peter continues his call to humility, but now he gives it a place: “under the mighty hand of God.”
That phrase would have sounded familiar to anyone who knew the Scriptures. The “mighty hand” of God often described His power to deliver, especially when He rescued Israel from Egypt. It is the language of strength and salvation.
So when Peter tells believers to humble themselves under God’s mighty hand, he is not asking them to shrink back in fear. He is inviting them to trust the power of the One who holds them.
Humility, in this sense, is not humiliation. It is choosing to place ourselves under God’s care rather than trying to control everything ourselves.
Peter also reminds us that God’s timing is different from ours.
We tend to look for quick recognition, quick resolution, and quick vindication. But Peter gently points us toward something else: “at the proper time he may exalt you.”
The timing belongs to God.
Sometimes that means waiting longer than we expected. Sometimes it means trusting that the work God is doing in us matters more than the outcomes we can see.
But the promise remains: the God who calls us to humility is also the One who lifts His people.
Our role is to trust His hand.
Lord, we confess how often we try to manage what only You can carry. Teach us to humble ourselves under Your mighty hand and to trust Your timing more than our own.
Under His Hand,
eep
