Clothe Yourselves

1 Peter 5:5

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
1 Peter 5:5

Peter now widens the conversation. Leadership matters, but humility belongs to everyone.

He uses a striking phrase: “Clothe yourselves with humility.”

The language suggests something intentional. Just as we choose what we wear each day, humility is something we deliberately put on.

The word Peter uses may even echo the image of tying on an apron, the kind of garment a servant would wear while working. It is hard not to remember the moment when Jesus wrapped a towel around His waist and washed the disciples’ feet.

Humility often looks like quiet service.

Peter first speaks to younger believers about respecting those who lead, but he quickly includes everyone: “all of you.” In the community of Christ, humility flows in every direction.

It means listening before speaking.
It means valuing others above ourselves.
It means remembering that none of us arrived here by our own strength.

Communities tend to fracture where pride quietly grows. But where humility takes root, something beautiful begins to happen. Trust deepens. Grace flows more freely. People begin to care for one another in ways that reflect the heart of Christ.

Humility does not diminish us. It simply places us in the right posture before God and before each other.

Father, forgive us for the pride that quietly slips into our hearts. Thank You for showing us true humility through Jesus. Help us wear humility daily as we serve one another.

Clothed in Humility,
