Not Domineering

1 Peter 5:3

Not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
1 Peter 5:3

Peter once believed leadership required strength and control.

The night Jesus was arrested, Peter drew a sword to defend Him. In Peter’s mind, protecting the kingdom meant taking charge of the moment.

Years later, Peter writes with a significantly different understanding.

He tells leaders not to be domineering over those entrusted to them. Authority in the kingdom of Christ does not operate through force or intimidation. Authority flows through our example.

Instead of controlling people, shepherds are called to show them the way.

An example is simply a life that others can observe and follow. Not perfect. Not flawless. But real. A life that quietly reflects obedience to Christ.

Most of us have experienced the difference between leadership that pressures and leadership that inspires.

Whether we realize it or not, people watch our lives long before they listen to our words.

This is true in churches, of course. But it is just as true in homes, classrooms, friendships, and workplaces. Influence often grows less from what we say and more from how we live.

Peter learned that lesson slowly. The impulsive fisherman became a steady shepherd.

And the same Spirit who shaped Peter continues shaping us.

Lord, forgive us when we try to control outcomes rather than care for people. Thank You for leading us with patience and grace. Help our lives become examples that point others toward You.
